Position Overview

Your Team

Reporting into the VP & CFO, Northern California, the Assistant Controller is responsible for recording daily accounting transactions, accounting procedures and producing and financial statements (including Joint Venture reporting). In this position, you will direct and coordinate the daily activities of the accounting and accounts payable departments.

Your Key Deliverables

Process Management

You will be responsible for recording monthly accounting transactions for projects and monthly reconciliation of accounts. Your tasks will include:

  • Preparing more complex or journal entries and review of standard journal entries from the accounting team
  • Preparing and maintaining monthly and quarterly checklists to facilitate efficient month-end and quarter-end close process to meet all required deadlines
  • Reviewing and managing the preparation of journal entries and reconciliations that go into the financial statements
  • Oversight of Banking, Check Disbursement, and Accounts Payable processes

Reporting and Analysis

You will prepare financial information that supports the business and respond timely to the requests and needs of Finance, Operation, Executive team, Corporate and Joint Venture partners. Your tasks will include:

  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and year-end working papers including full balance sheet reconciliation, ledger and sub-ledger journal entries, supporting financial and operational statements, and any required variance analysis
  • Preparing or reviewing financial reports monthly and quarterly which includes system-generated and non-system generated accounting reports
  • Maintaining the integrity of the land development budgets by verifying accuracy between budget reports
  • Maintaining, creating or improving system-generated reports or spreadsheets
  • Preparing supporting documentation for business, tax or income tax filings
  • Preparing reports or corporate packs and analysis of general ledger reports

Managing Accounting Staff

  • Supervising accountants and assisting other members of the accounting team in recording and administration of the financial transactions
  • Actively participating in the accounting human resource strategies by communicating and enforcing values, policies and procedures; implementing selection, orientation, training, coaching, mentoring, counseling, disciplinary, and communication programs; planning, supervising, appraising, and reviewing job contributions

Audit/SOX Compliance

  • Ensuring the processes follow the established internal controls
  • Preparing the required audit requests for internal and external audits

Must Haves

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and minimum 5 years relevant experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience;
  • Prior experience with leadership; managing of more than one team member
  • Proven experience in financial reporting and working paper preparation, full-cycle and job cost accounting
  • Proven ability to work with multiple departments/managers and assignments simultaneously
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel (intermediate level), Word, Outlook, and reporting skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to lead and operate in a fast paced environment

Nice to Haves

  • CPA Designation
  • Experience in real estate
  • Experience with system conversions would be an asset
